Sensorproblems are not difficult or expensive to fix and the rarer chain problems are not catastrophic like on the previous TS engines. Having owned both 2.2 JTS (5 years trouble free) and the diesel 2.0JTDM (works fine apart from DPF and EGR clogging fairly regularly) I'd say your more likely to have smooth trouble free running on the 2.2JTS.
Theworkshop manual I downloaded for the 2.2 version of the Alfa 159 indicates that the temperature sensor is bolted inside the sump; therefore, it's necessary to remove the sump to change the sensor. Of course, being an Alfa, getting the sump off requires a bit of additional R&R, but it's well within my capabilities.

Brera_Matt The EML came back on after about 2 weeks or so (code P0016), so finally got the work done today by my local garage. £385 all-in for the replacement kit - parts and labour . Very pleased considering I've heard £550, £1,000 and then the clowns at Alfa themselves wanting £2k :tut:.
Thisproblem seems to be more of an issue on 2.2 JTS models. Around the intake manifold – This can be a sign of the dreaded swirl flap issue (more on it later in this section). Forme the GM jts engines were a complete let down. The 2.2 cannot compare to Alfa's twinspark and 3.2 cannot come close to Alfa's Busso. I had the 3.2 159 that didn't last very long before timing chain issues which translated to R55k repairs almost 3 years ago. The 2.2 will set you back about R35k.
Afterreading the memory it had a P0016 code (CRANKSHAFT/CAMSHAFT POSITION CORRELATION) stored. 32 jts engine remove/rebuild. Tags remove or rebuild. (Compare to 2.2) long change intervals, wrong oil quolity and crank vent problems are probable cause of the failure in many cases. I have a Brera 2006 2.2 SV JTS and the very helpful Alfa independent garage that did the annual service suspect that the engine management light that has just come3gFRV.
